Local SEO program

The map pack moves on three separate levers three different problems

Most local SEO advice treats the map pack as one score. It is three scores, each with its own inputs, and fixing the wrong one wastes months.

Google's local ranking system is documented as running on three factors: proximity, prominence, and relevance. Treating them as one bucket is why so many local SEO efforts stall. A business can be maximally relevant and still lose to a closer competitor. A business can be close and still lose to one with stronger prominence signals. Each factor needs its own diagnosis and its own fix.

This page covers the tactical layer of local SEO, the specific levers that move a profile up or down in the map pack. It sits underneath the local SEO hub, which frames the discipline as a whole, and next to the Google Business Profile program, which handles the ongoing maintenance of the listing itself. This page is about what actually changes rank.

None of these levers work well pulled in isolation. Perfect category selection on a profile with no reviews still loses. A pile of reviews on a profile with the wrong primary category still underperforms. The work is diagnosing which lever is actually holding the profile back, then pulling it without disturbing the others.

We also cover how to test changes here, because local SEO tempts people into changing five things at once and then guessing which one worked. Map pack position is noisy enough that undisciplined testing produces false conclusions more often than real ones.

What it is

The three levers, handled separately

And the operational settings underneath each one.

Proximity is the least controllable lever and the most misunderstood. It is measured from the searcher's location, not from your business's ambitions, so you cannot optimize your way to being physically closer to someone. What you can control is service area configuration: telling Google accurately which areas you serve so the profile surfaces for searches inside that footprint instead of getting suppressed for overreach outside it.

Prominence is Google's read on how well-known and well-regarded a business is, built from review volume and quality, citation consistency, backlink profile, and general web presence. This is the lever most local programs neglect because it takes longer to move than a profile edit. It responds to a steady cadence of reviews, real local links, and a business that shows up consistently across the web with the same identity.

Relevance measures how well a profile and its supporting site match the intent of the query. This is where category selection does the most work. The primary category should match the single best description of the core business, and secondary categories should cover genuine additional services rather than every category that might apply. Service and product entries on the profile, and landing pages on the site that mirror those same offerings in the same language, reinforce relevance from both sides.

Landing page alignment closes the loop. A profile that lists 'commercial HVAC installation' as a service needs a page on the site that speaks specifically to commercial HVAC installation, not a general services page that mentions it in a bullet list. When the profile and the site agree on what the business does and how it is described, relevance signals compound instead of competing with each other.

Fit

Who this is for, and who it is not for

We would rather say no early than sell a program that cannot work.

Right fit when

  • Your map pack position has been flat or declining and you want a diagnosis of which lever is actually the problem.
  • You have a Google Business Profile already live and want its categories, services, and service area tuned properly.
  • You can approve landing page changes so the site can mirror what the profile claims.

Not the right fit when

  • You have no Google Business Profile yet. Start with profile setup under Google Business Profile management first.
  • You are looking for a one-time fix rather than a program that tests and iterates.
  • Your service area is so broad that map pack logic does not apply to your model.

Deliverables

What gets configured and tested

Six areas, each treated as its own decision.

Category audit

Primary category checked against the single best description of the business, with secondary categories pruned to what is genuinely offered.

Service area configuration

Service areas set to match real coverage, correcting the overreach that gets profiles suppressed in the areas that matter most.

Services and products entries

Every real service or product entered on the profile with accurate descriptions that mirror the language used on the corresponding site page.

Landing page alignment

Site pages audited against profile claims so the two tell the same story to both the algorithm and the searcher.

Prominence roadmap

A prioritized plan for review velocity, local links, and citation consistency, sequenced by which will move the needle fastest for your specific gap.

Controlled testing framework

One meaningful change at a time, tracked against a position baseline, so we know what actually worked before making the next move.

How we run it

How tactical changes get made

Slow enough to know what worked, fast enough to matter.

  1. Step 1: Baseline position tracking

Map pack position logged by keyword and location before any changes ship, so every later comparison has something real to measure against.

  2. Step 2: Diagnose the weak lever

Proximity, prominence, and relevance assessed independently to find which one is actually capping the profile rather than guessing.

  3. Step 3: Change one variable

Category, service area, or a page rewrite, shipped on its own with a set observation window before the next change goes out.

  4. Step 4: Read the result

Position tracked against the baseline for that window. Changes that help get kept and extended. Changes that do not get reverted, not left as clutter.

  5. Step 5: Roll into the ongoing program

Confirmed wins get folded into standard practice and the cycle repeats on the next weakest lever.

What is the fastest way to improve map pack rankings?

Fix service area configuration and primary category first. Both are one-time settings that directly affect proximity and relevance scoring, and errors in either can suppress an otherwise strong profile within days of correction.

Where this connects

How this connects to the rest of local SEO

The tactics here feed two other programs directly.

These levers sit inside the broader local SEO program, which frames how citations, reviews, and city pages work together.

The profile settings covered here are maintained day to day under Google Business Profile management where posts, photos, and review response keep the profile active between tactical changes.

Landing page alignment depends on solid on-page optimization so the page structure itself supports the same terms the profile uses.

Prominence gains come partly from link building focused on local publications and partners rather than generic national placements.

Because these changes need to be tracked accurately, they run through the same measurement layer built in analytics so position changes get tied to actual calls and form fills, not just rank screenshots.
