What is local SEO?

Local SEO is optimizing a business's online presence so it appears in location-based searches and Google Maps results. It relies on Google Business Profile accuracy, local citations, reviews, and location-specific content, and it matters most for businesses that serve a physical service area.

The detail

The longer answer

Local SEO is a distinct discipline from general SEO because Google treats location-based queries differently. Search 'plumber near me' and Google is not just ranking web pages, it is ranking businesses against a map, weighing proximity, relevance, and prominence in a formula separate from standard organic ranking.

The center of local SEO is the Google Business Profile, formerly Google My Business. This is the listing that shows a business's name, address, phone number, hours, category, photos, and reviews. An incomplete, outdated, or miscategorized profile is one of the most common reasons a legitimate, well-run business is invisible in local search while a less established competitor is not.

Consistency across the web matters more than most business owners expect. Citations, meaning mentions of a business's name, address, and phone number on directories, review sites, and local publications, need to match exactly. Inconsistent information across even a few directories can confuse the signals Google uses to confirm a business is legitimate and located where it says it is.

Reviews carry real weight, both in volume and in recency. A business with fifty reviews from three years ago competes worse than one with twenty recent reviews and thoughtful owner responses. Reviews are also one of the only ranking factors a business can influence directly through simple operational habits, like asking satisfied customers to leave one.

On-site content plays a role too. Location-specific pages, whether for multiple service areas or a single physical location, help Google understand exactly where and what a business serves, especially when that content includes real specifics rather than the same paragraph copied across every location page with the city name swapped in.

Local SEO overlaps with technical SEO and general on-page work, but it has its own priorities. A page that ranks nationally does not automatically rank locally, and a business can have excellent general SEO while still being invisible in the map pack because local-specific signals were never addressed.

The category a business is filed under matters more than people expect, and getting it wrong is a common, quiet failure point. A business categorized incorrectly in Google Business Profile can be functionally invisible for the exact searches it should be winning.

Key points

What to take away

  • Local SEO ranks businesses on Google Maps and local search results using proximity, relevance, and prominence.
  • An accurate, fully completed Google Business Profile is the single biggest lever in local SEO.
  • Name, address, and phone number need to match exactly across every directory and citation source.
  • Recent reviews carry more weight than older reviews, and review volume alone is not enough.
  • Location-specific content needs real local detail, not the same page duplicated with a city name swapped.
  • Strong national SEO does not automatically translate into strong local or map pack rankings.

Common misconception

What people get wrong

If a website ranks well in general Google search, it will automatically show up in local results too.

Local search results, especially the map pack, are ranked by a different set of signals centered on Google Business Profile, citations, and reviews. A site can rank on page one nationally and still be missing entirely from local map results because those local-specific signals were never built.

How Lingows handles this

In practice

We treat local SEO as its own workstream, starting with a full Google Business Profile audit, citation cleanup, and a review generation plan, rather than treating it as an afterthought to general SEO.

For multi-location or service-area businesses, we build location pages with real, specific local detail rather than templated copy, because that is what actually differentiates a page in the eyes of both Google and a searcher.
